“The Tories continue to treat our steel sector with contempt” – Gill Furniss
Gill Furniss MP, Labour’s Shadow Steel Minister, commenting on the government ending exclusive talks on British Steel with Turkish military pension fund, said:
“The Tories continue to treat our steel sector with contempt, and their inaction is having a real impact on the lives of workers and their families.
“5,000 direct jobs and many more in the supply chain depend on a deal going through. The government must do everything it can to ensure a responsible and credible buyer is found to secure the future of these important steelworks.
“Labour will create a level playing field for UK steel producers by addressing the energy price disparity, preventing steel dumping, and investing in R&D so that our sector can compete and thrive globally and take full advantage of the opportunities created by a Labour government with a real industrial strategy.”
Notes to Editors
- BritishSteel is once again in doubt on as the Official Receiver responsible for selling the business said it will start talking to other potential suitors after failing to agree terms with the Turkish company granted exclusivity in August.
