Time to end low pay and poor working conditions facing care-workers – Marsha de Cordova

Marsha de Cordova MP, Labour’s Shadow Women and Equalities Secretary, commenting on a recent survey from The Fawcett Society which found three in four people say carers should get the real living wage, said:

“In the week leading up to the 50th anniversary of the Equal Pay Act it is time to end the crisis of low pay and poor working conditions facing care-workers, the majority of whom are women.

“Care-workers have done heroic work during this Coronavirus crisis. But we cannot go out every week to clap our carers then expect them to remain undervalued and underpaid when the crisis ends. The public wants frontline staff to get the decent terms and working conditions they deserve.

“If the Government is serious about tackling the gender pay gap, it must urgently listen to Labour’s demands to pay all care-workers a proper living wage.”
