The Tories’ benefit cap is causing even more misery – Debbie Abrahams

Debbie Abrahams MP, Labour’s Shadow Work and Pensions Secretary, commenting on the benefit cap statistics released by the Department for Work and Pensions today, said:

“The Tories’ benefit cap is causing even more misery for vulnerable families already struggling with falling real wages and the rising cost of everyday essentials and childcare.

“It is shameful that the Government is appealing last year’s High Court ruling that the benefit cap was unlawful and causing “real misery for no good purpose” for nearly 30,000 families with children under two, many of whom are women escaping domestic abuse.

”Labour opposed the reduction of the benefit cap when it was introduced. We will transform our social security system so that it provides security and dignity for all.”
