Tories have failed local government – Andrew Gwynne

Andrew Gwynne MP, Shadow Secretary of State for Communities and Local Government, responding to the news that three more Conservative councils have been added to the list of those showing signs of financial stress because of funding cuts, said:

“This Government has utterly failed local government, forcing many authorities to struggle to maintain basic services after cutting their funding to the bone.

“Not long ago, the Government was attacking Councils for ‘pleading poverty’ and urging them to spend their reserves – and the mess at Northamptonshire bears testament to how much of a mistake this was.

“This news suggests that unless we see urgent action from the Government, more councils may follow Northamptonshire and will be at risk of bankruptcy.”
