Tories to let state-backed companies from other nations run our railways – Andy McDonald

Andy McDonald MP, Labour’s Shadow Transport Secretary, responding to reports that a Chinese company could potentially be awarded the management contract for HS2 trains, said:

“We have the sixth largest economy in the world and a wealth of talent, but Britain is being held back by its own government from running a train line. The Germans run the railways in Wales, the French operate Southern Rail, the Dutch control Abellio across the country, the East Coast is now looked after by Canada – and now we hear that China is shortlisted to take charge of HS2.

“The Tories are happy to let state-backed companies from other nations run our railways, but their ideological obsession with the free market means they don’t trust the British state to do the same. They’re feigning phoney patriotism while selling off our services and infrastructure.

“The next Labour government will take back control of our railways, bringing high skilled jobs and investment that the UK has long been denied, and support the creation and protection of skilled jobs in Britain.”
