The Tories have slashed funding at every stage of our education system, reversing years of investment under Labour – Angela Rayner
Angela Rayner MP, Labour’s Shadow Education Secretary, commenting on the ‘Annual Report on Education Spending in England’ released by the Institute for Fiscal Studies, said:
“The Tories have slashed funding at every stage of our education system, reversing years of investment under the last Labour government.
“It is absolutely shocking that Sure Start could now have lost more than two thirds of its funding, denying countless families the support they need during childhood. Despite the Tories promising to protect per pupil funding for schools, the IFS found it has been cut by nearly a tenth since they took office, and by more than a fifth for teenagers in sixth form. Further education colleges have suffered a brutal squeeze, and there are a million fewer adult learners, with spending on skills now down by nearly half.
“Each and every one of these cuts mean families and learners of all ages are denied the opportunities they deserve. This will be a disaster for both society and the economy as a whole.
“That is why next Labour government will invest in every part of our education system, rolling back cuts to Sure Start, giving schools and sixth forms the resources they need, and making further and adult education free, as part of a National Education Service that provides free learning from cradle to grave.”
