UK-Mexico trade failure – Barry Gardiner responds
Barry Gardiner MP, Labour’s Shadow Trade Secretary, responding to the government’s announcement of a new Partnership Agreement between the United Kingdom and Mexico, said:
“The new Foreign Secretary is spinning a negotiating defeat as a victory.
“This deal fails every test set by the government: it doesn’t replicate the terms of Mexico’s agreement with the EU, reduce tariffs to zero on the majority of goods, or reduce other kinds of barriers to trade between us and Mexico.
“Thanks to the new PM’s administration, we will have a poorer trade relationship with Mexico than the EU.
“Boris Johnson’s government cannot be trusted to deliver for the people of the UK – and this is just more proof of that.”

In July 2017, the former Secretary of State for International Trade, Rt Hon Dr Liam Fox MP, visited Mexico stating that he hoped to “replicate” the terms of the EU-Mexico agreement in a corresponding UK-Mexico agreement.
