Warnings were ignored and buildings across the country are still at risk – Karen Lee

Karen Lee MP, Shadow Fire and Emergencies Minister, responding to reports that the government was warned two years before Grenfell about fire risks on buildings, said:

“The government was warned by fire safety experts about the risks before Grenfell and took no effective action. The refurbishment of Grenfell tower should have included fire safety barriers to restrict the spread of fire but instead created a ‘tinderbox’.

“Expert warnings have been ignored and buildings across the country are still at risk. The government has dragged its feet, when it should have acted with urgency 19 months ago.

“The government has to act now to tackle fire safety failures and prioritise public safety rather than private interests.”
