Our water system is at breaking point – Rebecca Long Bailey
Rebecca Long Bailey MP, Labour Shadow Business Secretary, commenting on the Environment Agency’s report concerning pressures on England’s water resources, said:
“Today’s report shows that our water system, after years of under-investment in vital infrastructure, is at breaking point.
“Climate change, a growing population and privatisation are piling pressure on our leaky Victorian water system, which is being paid for by hard up customers. Meanwhile private water companies fail to invest and instead suck money out of the system.
“In the last ten years, water companies have paid 1,000 times more in dividends to their shareholders than in tax. Some have even paid more in dividends than they have made in profit, running up debts that are passed on to bill payers.
“Labour will fix this broken system by bringing the water companies back into public ownership, saving households £100 per year on their bills.’’
