Whaley Bridge needs a permanent plan – Luke Pollard

Luke Pollard MP, Labour’s Shadow Fishing, Flooding and Water Minister, responding to news that Whaley Bridge residents can return home, said:

“It’s fantastic news that it’s finally safe for the residents of Whaley Bridge to return to their homes. The emergency services, RAF and local volunteers have done incredible work in the area.

“We need to make sure a permanent plan is put in place to keep the community safe. We’ve seen before that when the news crews have left and the headlines die down, commitments made are often forgotten. We owe it to the people of Whaley Bridge not to let that happen.

“Labour will continue to make the case for Britain to be more prepared for extreme weather, including increased flooding and disruption as a result of the climate crisis. The climate emergency means that we are left with no choice but to properly fund extreme weather adaptions.”
