Yasmin Qureshi responds to Public Accounts Committee report into Government’s £1.2bn courts reform programme
Yasmin Qureshi MP, Labour’s Shadow Justice Minister, responding to the Public Accounts Committee report into the Government’s £1.2bn courts reform programme, said:
“This is yet more evidence that the Government’s court reform programme risks causing long term damage to access to justice. Despite the warnings that their plans are set to fail the Government seems to be carrying on regardless, just as it did with the botched privatisation of probation.
“The Conservatives have already closed hundreds of courts and axed thousands of vital court staff under the smokescreen of its courts reform programme, with a detrimental impact on victims and witnesses.
“It is simply not acceptable that the Government is forcing through such large-scale reforms of our justice system without proper parliamentary or public debate. It should halt all further court closures until these reforms can be can be subjected to the full scrutiny that they merit.”
