Rayner set to open Labour Conference with pledge to ‘get Britain’s future back’ with a plan to make working people better off

Labour Deputy Leader says Party will reverse the Tories’ national decline with decent jobs, secure homes and strong communities.

Angela Rayner is set to open the Labour Party Conference with a vision for Britain with “growth in all places for all people” built on the foundation of “a decent job, a secure home and a strong community”.

In comments ahead of her speech in Liverpool on Sunday, Angela Rayner, Labour’s Shadow Deputy Prime Minister, accused Rishi Sunak and his Party of “taking a sledgehammer” to the foundations of a good life:

“Rishi Sunak and the Tories have time and time again taken a sledgehammer to the foundations a good life can be built upon. Decent jobs, secure homes and strong communities are being snatched away from people.

“With five Prime Ministers in seven years and constant chaos and instability, Britain’s future has been left to take a back seat. The Tories’ legacy is national decline – a nation levelled down and starved of hope.”

“While the Tories have stolen Britain’s future, it’s Labour that will give it back with our plan to make working people better off by securing growth for all people and in all places”.

Ahead of her speech, Rayner, Labour’s Shadow Secretary of State for Levelling Up, Housing and Communities said she would set out Labour’s plan to end the Tory housing emergency:

“The Tories have failed renters, leaseholders, and first-time buyers. They’ve failed to build the homes Britain needs. Labour’s plan for secure homes will put an end the Tories’ housing emergency.”

The Labour Party Deputy Leader, who also serves at the Strategic Lead for the New Deal for Working People is set to flesh out Labour’s plan to make work pay said:

“Labour’s New Deal for Working People is our plan to boost wages, make work more secure and support working people to thrive. Our New Deal is mission-critical. It’s how Labour will make work pay.”

Rayner is also expected to pledge the “biggest ever transfer of power out of Westminster” and say after thirteen years under the Tories “the places that once built Britain have been abandoned”.

Rayner has spoken about ending the North-South divide in her new position, and called the Tories’ Levelling Up project “dead on arrival”.
