Boosting defence spending to protect British interests

Labour is stepping up to protect Britain in the face of evolving global security threats. We have set out plans to boost national security spending to 5% of GDP by 2035, including the biggest sustained increase in core defence funding since the Cold War. This investment will also back UK defence industries, support hundreds of businesses, and create tens of thousands of jobs across the country.

Historic new security deals with Germany and the EU

The landmark security deals Labour has agreed with Germany and the EU will protect British lives and strengthen our national interest, increasing our cooperation on shared issues like Russia’s war in Ukraine, hybrid threats, and maritime security. After years of Tory decline, we’re rebuilding relationships with our closest allies to put Britain back on the world stage.

    Supporting Ukraine against Russian aggression

A just and lasting peace is vital for Ukraine, for Europe and for Britain’s security. With Labour, the UK has continued to stand firm with our allies to defend Ukraine, uphold international law, and secure a stable future for our continent.

Taking a leading role in NATO

Labour is increasing our focus on defence to meet today’s global threats. We’re putting the UK at the forefront of efforts to make NATO stronger, fairer and more effective. At the heart of this is a new defence investment pledge, with NATO allies agreeing to raise defence and security spending to 5% of GDP by 2035.

Standing up for our Armed Forces and their families

Labour is committed to protecting those who serve. We’ve delivered the biggest Armed Forces pay rise in over 20 years, created the first-ever independent Armed Forces Commissioner, and brought 36,000 military homes back into public ownership. We’re delivering on our promise to renew the UK’s moral contract with service personnel, veterans, and their families, in recognition of their huge contribution to our country.

Why this is important

No policy commitment in pursuit of our missions matters unless we uphold the first duty of any government: to keep the country safe.

Peace and security are hard earned, and they require constant vigilance. In recognition of the rapidly changing international security context, Labour is committed to strengthening our armed forces and protecting our national security.
