Yvette Cooper comments on Suella Braverman refusing to disclose Rwanda scheme cost to the PAC

Yvette Cooper MP, Labour’s Shadow Home Secretary, commenting on reports that Suella Braverman has refused to disclose the cost of the Tories’ Rwanda asylum scheme to the Public Accounts Committee, said:

“This is a disgraceful cover up. The Home Secretary is so embarrassed by the sky-high cost of her failing Rwanda plan that she is trying to hide the details. Ministers have already written £140 million in cheques to Rwanda before anything has even happened, and there are warnings that the true cost per person sent could be hundreds of thousands of pounds.

“We already know that Home Office officials have warned that this scheme is “unenforceable” and has “a high risk of fraud”. The Public Accounts Committee need proper access to this information in full.

“This comes on top of the billions the Tories are now spending on hotel costs because of the chaos in the system. Only Labour will get a grip, clear the backlog, and save the taxpayer billions of pounds”.
