Richard Burgon

Labour Party Deputy Leadership Candidate

Richard Burgon

MP for Leeds East

Richard’s Candidate Statement

“The fightback starts now.

“Winning the next general election means regaining the trust of all the voters we’ve lost.

“I fully back our previous two manifestos which offer real solutions to the problems our communities face.

“But great policies aren’t enough. I’ll be Organiser and Campaigner In Chief. My focus will be on building a Labour Party rooted in every community, with powerful local campaigns and community-based organising that show whose side we’re on.

“I will overhaul our messaging to focus on 10 key policies that are easily explainable on the doorstep.

“I’ll always stand up for Labour members and trade unions.

“My three key pledges to you are:

  • Open Selection so you can choose your candidate at every election
  • A new Clause IV to hardwire public ownership into our constitution
  • A Labour Peace Pledge so we never again repeat the mistakes of Iraq

“I’ve always stood up to the establishment. Before being an MP, I was a trade union solicitor for a decade. As an MP, I voted against the 2015 Tory Welfare Bill and supported Jeremy in both leadership elections. When I sued The Sun, I used the compensation to fund a local internship.

“As Secretary of the Socialist Campaign Group of Labour MPs, founded by Tony Benn, I believe our values of peace, equality and socialism are more necessary than ever.

“Our communities, in all their diversity, need a Labour government. Whoever is Leader, I’ll be a team player laser-focused on winning back power.”
