Lucy Powell

Born and raised in Manchester, Lucy Powell was elected Deputy Leader of the Labour Party in October 2025, after having been first elected as Labour MP for Manchester Central in 2012.         

Lucy’s politics were shaped growing up in the North under Thatcher. She is a proud Mancunian. Lucy is a champion of Labour values, passionate about rewiring the country in the interests of ordinary people and taking on vested interests. 

As Deputy Leader Lucy is campaigning around the country, engaging and enthusing members, reaching out to communities, making sure Labour are listening and involved in the nation’s conversations through her “Lucy Listens” programme on behalf of the Party.   

With a track record of delivering real change, Lucy is working closely with Keir Starmer and the Labour Government to put Labour values of social justice, fairness, and opportunity into action, making sure the change Labour is bringing to Britain is felt up and down every community across the country.

Lucy has held a number of key roles in Parliament and within the Labour Party. She was Shadow Secretary of State for Digital, Culture, Media, and Sport, where she led Labour’s vision for a thriving, inclusive creative sector and a fairer digital economy. She previously served as Shadow Housing Secretary, Shadow Minister for Business and Consumers, and Secretary of State for Education championing policies to end the cladding scandal, improve education, support business, and create better jobs.

In July 2024, Lucy was appointed Leader of the House of Commons and a member of Keir Starmer’s first cabinet. In this role, she oversaw Labour’s first King’s Speech in 14 years, the most ambitious legislative programme in a generation. Early legislation she helped deliver included the Employment Rights Bill, bringing rail franchises into public ownership, setting up GB Energy, the Football Governance Bill, Renters’ Rights Bill and Hillsborough Law.  She also led the first House of Commons Modernisation Committee in 15 years.

As MP for Manchester Central, Lucy has been at the forefront of efforts to secure investment in the city, improve housing, and fighting injustice. She has been a leading voice in building safety and leasehold reform, fighting to ensure that leaseholders and tenants are protected from unfair practices.
