Chi Onwurah responds to news that the UK is set to miss its R&D spending target after funding cuts
Chi Onwurah MP, Labour’s Shadow Science Minister, responding to news that the UK is set to miss its R&D spending target after funding cuts, said:
“Today’s news that the Government may miss its already modest R&D spending targets poses a threat to the UK’s world leading research sector.
“The Government’s existing target of 2.4% of GDP is already short of the 3% that Labour is calling for and new cuts to overseas development funding put it at risk.
“This Government has failed to protect our research sector from the impact of the pandemic despite years of warm words for the sector, abandoning key research organisations when they most needed support. This is yet another example of a Government devoid of industrial strategy, a plan for our economic recovery, or the will to support the high skill, high wage jobs of the future.”
