John McDonnell accuses UK government of lagging behind other countries on coronavirus income protection
John McDonnell MP, Labour’s Shadow Chancellor, accusing the UK government of lagging behind other countries on providing income protection for coronavirus-affected workers, said:
“With more redundancies and salary cuts announced today it is imperative that the government urgently comes up with an income protection package for workers losing, or at risk of losing, their jobs because of the coronavirus crisis.
“The UK is lagging behind other countries, despite some of them being made aware of coronavirus cases weeks after we were.
“The government has prioritised loans for business but has not secured assurances that jobs will be protected in exchange.
“Labour will work with the government to ensure the UK has the best possible policies to respond to this emergency, and we are engaging with businesses and trade unions to inform our view of what should be done. The lesson from the 2007/08 crash is that governments have to act fast, firmly and big to succeed.”
