Jonathan Ashworth responds to ONS coronavirus impact statistics
Jonathan Ashworth MP, Labour’s Shadow Health Secretary, commenting on ONS statistics that show coronavirus has had the highest impact on the most deprived areas of England, said:
“We know that poverty and deprivation lead to people becoming ill quicker and dying sooner and it’s been obvious for months that the virus is having a devastating impact on those who live in the poorest communities.
“Over five months on from lockdown, Ministers have failed to put in place any measures to protect these communities despite it being clear that there is still a devastating social gradient in health outcomes caused by the virus.
“Ministers must get a grip on tackling health inequalities urgently – the poorest in society cannot continue to be more severely impacted by this virus and protecting those who live in these areas must be a Government priority.”
