Richard Burgon responds to Prison Service Workforce data
Richard Burgon MP, Labour’s Shadow Justice Secretary, responding to today’s Prison Service Workforce data showing a fall in the number of prison officers in post, said:
“The Tories ideological cuts have caused a crisis in our prisons. It is shocking, given the record levels of violence in prisons, that the number of officers is falling yet again.
“The stark truth is that there are still thousands fewer prison officers than when Labour left office, and there are already too few staff to safely manage things as they are, never mind any planned expansion. The Tories’ reckless decision to axe thousands of officers has left our prisons more dangerous than ever.
“These cuts must be reversed and the government needs to urgently set out a plan to tackle this exodus of experienced officers.”
