Boris Johnson’s broken promise to promote a record number of women and a lack of diversity in the new Cabinet

Dawn Butler MP, Labour’s Shadow Equalities Secretary, commenting on Boris Johnson’s broken promise to promote a record number of women and a lack of diversity in the new Cabinet, said:

“Boris Johnson broke his promise to promote a record number of women into government and picked a Cabinet that’s even less representative of this country than when he came in.

“It comes as no surprise from a Tory government which made women bear the brunt of austerity, starved women’s refuges of funding, and recently tried to deport black men who came to this country as small children for the types of crimes that the Prime Minister has cheerily admitted to committing.

“We’re going backwards, not forwards. It’s shameful.”

Notes to editors

When Johnson became Prime Minister he promised a “a cabinet for modern Britain” https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-politics-49034735

Number 10 yesterday briefed that the number of women in Cabinet would remain the same: https://twitter.com/BethRigby/status/1228043302336966657?s=20

However, the number of women in the Cabinet has reduced by one, and the number of people from minority ethnic backgrounds has reduced by one.

The percentage of privately educated Cabinet members has risen from 59 per cent when Johnson became Prime Minister, to 68 per cent. https://www.thetimes.co.uk/article/diversity-goes-backwards-in-boris-johnsons-reshuffle-tdx6hklzd
