Government has finally bowed to pressure from Labour and campaigners to introduce a ban on ivory sales – Hayman

Sue Hayman MP, Labour’s Shadow Environment Secretary, responding to the Government’s proposal to ban ivory sales, said:

“The Government has finally bowed to pressure from Labour and campaigners to introduce a ban on ivory sales.

“At the last General Election a total ban on ivory sales was in Labour’s manifesto but not in the Conservative one.

“Given the continued practice of ivory poaching across Africa it is vital that legislation is brought forward swiftly. The Government must step up its efforts to press for the closure of international legal ivory markets ahead of the London Conference on the Illegal Wildlife Trade in October.”
