The Tories have capitulated to pressure from their powerful allies in the media – Tom Watson
Tom Watson MP, Labour’s Shadow Digital, Culture, Media and Sport Secretary, responding to the Government’s decision to close the Leveson Inquiry and repeal Section 40 of the Crime and Courts act, said:
“This announcement is a huge disappointment, a breach of trust and a bitter blow to the victims of press intrusion.
“In 2012 all the major parties agreed to implement the Leveson recommendations, establish a new system of independent press regulation and deliver justice for the victims of press intrusion and criminality.
“Section 40 was designed to give protection to journalists and newspapers who signed up to an independent regulator while enabling the public to seek redress cheaply and quickly.
“Today the Tories have betrayed all those who have been and will be victims of press intrusion and instead capitulated to pressure from their powerful allies in the media.”
