JUST ANNOUNCED: Labour will build a clean energy grid for Britain to cut bills and create jobs

Ed Miliband speaking at Labour conference

A Labour government would use new plans to get Britain building again to create a clean energy grid, unlocking over £200bn of private investment into communities across the country.

As part of Labour’s mission to make Britain a clean energy superpower, a new publicly-owned energy company, GB Energy, would coordinate the transmission operators to launch a super-tender which will procure the grid supply chain that Britain needs.

Labour’s policy – revealed in speeches by Shadow Chancellor Rachel Reeves and Shadow Secretary of State for Energy Security and Net Zero Ed Miliband at Labour Party Conference on Monday – will:

  1. Secure the supply chain capacity to build fast
  2. Bring jobs and investment to make sure we manufacture the cables we and others need here in Britain
  3. Provide the incentives we need to build by opening up future grid development to competition, with GB Energy looking to be involved

These steps will:

  • Strengthen our energy security, by ensuring that the UK has the critical grid supply chain we need for Labour’s plans for clean power by 2030 and beyond
  • Cut bills, by delivering cheap, clean, homegrown power onto the system more quickly
  • Create jobs, in building the grid and creating demand for new supply chain factories to deliver these orders here in Britain
  • Cut costs and create exports, lowering the price through bulk purchasing and standardisation, and creating significant export opportunities for Britain
  • Help achieve Labour’s missions for clean power by 2030 and for growth, by removing one of the biggest obstacles to both

“Labour’s energy policy will take back control of our energy system to deliver clean power and energy independence for Britain,” Shadow Energy Security and Net Zero Secretary Ed Miliband said.

“With GB Energy, our publicly owned energy company, we will deliver the grid we need to slash bills for every family and business.

“The Conservatives are the party of stagnation and delay. Only Labour has a plan to make working people better off – and to give Britain its future back.”
