Watch: Keir Starmer on how his working-class background influences his approach to changing politics
In Labour’s latest Party Election Broadcast, Keir Starmer explains how his working-class childhood drives his ambition to return respect and dignity back to public life.
The son of a nurse and a toolmaker, his parents were a huge influence on him and the person he has become.
His mother’s serious illness meant that his family “faced huge challenges” while he was growing up: “It means I can look people in the eye and say I know how tough life can get.”
But their determination to carry on, and care for each other, instilled in him a strong work ethic and sense of public service.
“My parents were strong people. Courageous, determined, modest. Respect and dignity are really important to me.”
As Labour leader, Keir Starmer has applied the lessons he learned from his parents into shaping how a government led by him would look: “I changed the party, to put it back in the service of working people, [to make it] one that puts national security and respect for taxpayers’ money at the heart of everything we do.”
