The Jo Cox Women in Leadership Programme

Want to take on leadership in the Labour Party, local government, your workplace or community? We’re looking for women members to join our Jo Cox Women in Leadership Programme.

About the Programme

The Jo Cox Women in Leadership Programme is a personal and political development programme for passionate and experienced women members who are ready to lead.

In memory of our friend and colleague Jo Cox, Labour Women’s Network and the Labour Party launched the Jo Cox Women in Leadership Programme in 2016. Jo was an extremely talented MP, Chair of Labour Women’s Network and a proud Labour feminist who championed women in leadership roles.

Now entering its fourth cohort, this programme has created a generation of women who can continue Jo’s fight in parliament, local government and in their communities. They are an army of feminist changemakers, whose mutual support and collective voice emboldens them in rattling cages and getting things done.

Jo battled to increase women’s representation in Parliament, and would doubtless be proud that the Parliamentary Labour Party is now gender balanced, and impatient for this to be the case across all levels of representation.

Jo lived and breathed inclusion, and we know that she would celebrate the diversity of the women we have trained so far on the Jo Cox Women in Leadership Scheme. From the most recent cohort, the youngest participant was 18, and the oldest mid-sixties. 32% were women of colour, 20% had a disability, and 25% identified as lesbian or bisexual. Among them were train drivers, sound engineers, doctors, firefighters, carers and scientists. They hail from every region of the UK. If you worry this scheme might not be for people like you, it probably is.

Programme Schedule

The Programme takes place across three weekend gatherings over a number of months, including an overnight residential, with homework and other challenges in between. It is a commitment, but most of all, it is an investment in yourself.

All applicants need to be available to attend sessions on:

  • Saturday 5 February 2022
  • Saturday 5 and Sunday 6 March 2022 (residential with overnight stay)
  • Saturday 21 May 2022

Here’s what graduates of the course have to say:

“Firstly, it was a massive privilege to be part of one of 57 women on the Jo Cox Women in Leadership Programme. There was an immense amount of pride in becoming the first Sikh female MP. The programme was just wonderful. Firstly, because of Jo Cox, her legacy, the things that she achieved, what she stood for. It was a very emotional moment to, in her memory, have something that promotes women coming through. But with it comes a real sense of responsibility, the biggest being to give other people a break and an opportunity. The programme really made me think about who I am and what I wanted to become – it was just priceless.”

Preet Kaur Gill MP, Shadow Secretary of State for International Development, Cohort 1

“Alison McGovern MP described Jo Cox’s support as akin to ‘having one arm wrapped around your shoulder and the other one pushing you forward. The programme itself is designed to prepare women to take roles of leadership into politics and beyond. It was a surreal and humbling experience to have so much time and energy invested into me from the party. It gave me confidence and made me feel valued. Now I’ve graduated from the programme, I feel as though there’s isn’t anything that my persuasive, eloquent and determined sisters and I can’t achieve together. I can honestly say it’s one of the best things I’ve ever done.”

Deeba Syed, Bethnal Green & Bow, Cohort 2

“Jo Cox Women in Leadership is more than simply a programme! It is a catalyst for change, growth and solidarity for those on the programme and more importantly those whose lives they impact on a daily basis. I feel incredibly blessed to be a part of cohort 3 and have access to such thought-provoking training, honesty and tools to help me. I have returned a more confident woman who can use her voice more effectively. The beauty has been watching my other Jo Cox sisters do the same. Despite being located all over the UK we encourage each other daily. Thank you for planting such incredible seeds of wisdom!”

Cllr Sharon Thomson, Birmingham Edgbaston, Cohort 3
