Andy McDonald commenting on Theresa May’s announcement of £106m funding for the research and development of zero-emission vehicles

Commenting on Theresa May’s announcement of £106m funding for the research and development of zero-emission vehicles, Labour’s Shadow Secretary of State for Transport Andy McDonald said:

“This announcement doesn’t change the Tories’ record of failure to support clean and sustainable transport. Earlier this year the Road to Zero strategy rowed back on previous commitments to clean up road transport by weakening the 2040 target.

“The Government has failed to deliver the investment needed to provide public charging infrastructure and has cut grants to electric vehicle users at a time when greater support is required to encourage a shift to electric. This inaction will cause the UK to miss its climate change targets and allow 40,000 annual premature deaths caused by air pollution to continue.

“The Government must come forward with an ambitious and detailed roadmap for removing polluting vehicles from our roads, alongside an industrial strategy to ensure Britain’s automotive sector becomes a leader in this emerging global industry.”
