The announcement that Vivergo Fuels is easing production is devastating news for the workforce in the North

Karl Turner MP, Shadow Minister for Shipping, Aviation and Road Safety, commenting on the announcement of UK bio-ethanol producer Vivergo Fuels to cease production, said:

“This is devastating news for the workforce in the North and will be a significant blow to the UK’s renewable fuel industry. The loss of 150 skilled jobs at the plant and the thousands of jobs impacted in the wider supply chain will be really damaging for the region. The Government is failing to hit its own target of at least 10 per cent of transport fuels being from renewable sources by 2020.

“Labour has been calling on the Government to mandate the use of E10 petrol for some time now in order to tackle climate change. Transport is the single largest greenhouse-gas-emitting sector, and an estimated 50,000 premature deaths each year in the UK are linked to air pollution. To tackle this issue we should be at the forefront of adopting new, environmentally friendly fuels, not hindering domestic producers.

“The proposed closure of Vivergo Fuels tells you all you need to know about how serious the Tories are about boosting the economy of the North and tackling climate change. They simply don’t care.”
