Boris Johnson cannot be trusted on border staff recruitment
Labour says Boris Johnson cannot be trusted to recruit 500 extra border staff before 31 October, as figures show that the Tories have previously broken their promise to recruit customs workers, with numbers actually falling.
Despite pledging thousands of extra HMRC staff to help with new customs arrangements in the event of No Deal, official figures show those in post fell from 64,420 in March 2018 to 63,575 in March 2019.
Anneliese Dodds MP, Shadow Financial Secretary, said:
“Boris Johnson has spent his life ducking responsibility for his mistakes, and he cannot be trusted on anything.
“He is not being honest with the public and not being honest with his government’s staff who have faced almost a decade of cuts to their jobs and pay.
“Johnson’s government is refusing to even report on how prepared our businesses are for No Deal, and we still do not know how many companies have the required identification number to trade under a No Deal scenario.
“This reckless government is risking our country’s economy and our security by persisting with a No Deal Brexit.”
