Boris Johnson’s bigotry shames our country – Dawn Butler

Dawn Butler MP, Labour’s Shadow Women and Equalities Secretary, responding to reports of a 375% increase in anti-Muslim incidents following Boris Johnson’s comments about Muslim women, said:

“The fact that an MP’s racist comments could result in a 375% increase in hate crime is chilling. The fact that this same MP is now the Prime Minister, is stomach-turning and shames our country.

“Boris Johnson’s bigotry has resulted in attacks on Muslim women and his refusal to apologise for his hateful remarks has emboldened racists and the far right. He’s also given bigots in his Party a free pass by breaking his promise to hold an independent inquiry specifically into Tory Islamophobia.

“Boris Johnson actively fans the flames of hatred and division. His words have damaging consequences. He is not fit to sit in the House of Commons, let alone Number 10.”

• Boris Johnson has repeatedly refused to apologise, for example: https://news.sky.com/story/boris-johnson-stands-by-burka-remarks-accusing-colleagues-of-confected-indignation-11511406 In a recent interview with Sky’s Sophy Ridge, Boris Johnson defended his articles comparing Muslim women to letterboxes and bank robbers, and describing gay people as “tank topped bum boys”. He refused to apologise and said his comments in all of the articles were taken “out of context”. He also said his article describing black people as “picanninies” with “watermelon smiles” was “satirical”.
