‘Buried’ DWP report shows no evidence that sanctioning helps – Greenwood
Margaret Greenwood MP, Labour’s Shadow Work and Pensions Secretary, commenting on a damning DWP report on welfare reform, said:
“It is shocking that this government is sanctioning working people who are just trying to do the right thing.
“This report shows that there is no evidence that sanctioning helps people increase their earnings. Meanwhile, wages are still below 2008 levels and millions of people are stuck in insecure work.
“Universal Credit is clearly failing in its current form. Labour is committed to a root-and-branch review of the social security system to ensure it tackles poverty and provides support when people need it.
“Labour is the only party that will address the rising levels of in-work poverty. In government, we will scrap the punitive sanctions regime and introduce a Real Living Wage of £10 an hour to build an economy for the many, not the few.”
