The burning of symbols and names of deceased police officers on last night’s bonfire in Derry/Londonderry is utterly deplorable – Tony Lloyd

Tony Lloyd MP, Labour’s Shadow Northern Ireland Secretary, commenting on last night’s anti-internment bonfire in Derry City, said:

“The burning of symbols and names of deceased police officers on last night’s bonfire in Derry/Londonderry is utterly deplorable and the local community have rightly condemned these actions.

“Questions need to be asked why this unsanctioned bonfire was able to take place and I will be asking the Permanent Secretary of the Executive Office to meet with me to discuss this.

“Derry/Londonderry has been seen as a success in how to bring Northern Ireland’s divided communities together. Those who organised this bonfire are stuck in a mindset of division and hate that does not represent the new Northern Ireland that we all want to build.”
