David Lammy responds to appointment of panel on reform of judicial review process
David Lammy MP, Shadow Justice Secretary, responding to the Ministry of Justice’s appointment of a panel of experts to examine whether there is a need to reform the judicial review process, said:
“The judicial review process is how the public can use the courts to hold the Government to account when it acts against the law.
“Appointing a Tory Lord, who wrote that Parliament should legislate to limit judicial review after the prorogation case, to chair the panel examining it raises serious questions over its independence.
“There is no need to examine the judicial review process in the first place. The Ministry of Justice should be concentrating on getting the courts open safely during the pandemic. This is a blatant attempt to disempower the public and hoard more power in Number 10.”
