Emily Thornberry responds to the Government’s announcement of a dedicated helpline and online service for British businesses exporting to Europe

Emily Thornberry MP, Labour’s Shadow International Trade Secretary, responding to the Government’s announcement of a dedicated helpline and online service for British businesses exporting to Europe, said:

“In November 2020, I urged Ministers to put a dedicated helpline and online service in place for British importers and exporters in time for the 1st January transition date, and they told me it was unnecessary. Now, eleven months after my request and nine months too late, they are finally taking action.

“It is definitely a case of better later than never, but it does not make up for the shambolic way in which the Government managed our country’s Brexit preparations, and the damage that has been done to British businesses by leaving them without dedicated support during an already hugely difficult year.

“Now what those businesses need, even more than a helpline, is for the Government to acknowledge the problems facing their exports as a result of Boris Johnson’s botched Brexit deal, and take practical action to fix the holes in that deal so we can get our trade with Europe back where it should be.”
