Government failed to carry out its duty of care – Barry Gardiner

Barry Gardiner MP, Shadow Trade Secretary, commenting on the revelation that further export licences were awarded by the government in breach of the Court of Appeal’s ruling and the undertaking to Parliament that export licences would not be awarded to Saudi Arabia’s coalition partners in Yemen, said:

“This is shocking. The government has failed to carry out its duty of care in a conflict where thousands of people have died.

“The government repeatedly claims that we have a robust and rigorous arms control regime. But the best rules are useless unless you implement them.

“Given the Secretary of State’s admission that further breaches may well follow, we now need a root and branch review to establish a dedicated Committee with the necessary powers to ensure that the proper control is exercised.”
