Government failing on its promise to keep pupils learning – Wes Streeting
Wes Streeting MP, Labour’s Shadow Minister for Schools, responding to Department for Education data published today showing that over one in six children were off school last week, said:
“This data shows the Government is failing on its promise keep pupils learning, with almost a million children out of school last week – the highest number in peacetime.
“We need to know how many children have lost out on learning because of repeated absences or because staff have been forced to isolate at home.
“These shocking figures underline why all schools need access to rapid testing, why every pupil isolating needs support to learn remotely and why the Government must urgently publish a plan for exams that takes into account these extraordinary levels of lost learning.”
