Government has questions to answer over William Hill money laundering – Tom Watson
Tom Watson MP, Labour’s Shadow Digital, Culture, Media and Sport Secretary, commenting on William Hill’s fine for allowing money laundering, said:
“William Hill has just been fined £6.2 million by the Gambling Commission for accepting money from criminals without carrying out proper background checks. And this is an industry that talks about ‘responsible gambling’.
“All gambling companies should now publish details of the steps they take to prevent money-laundering, so the public can be confident this will not happen again.
“The Government has questions to answer about why they exempted bookies from new EU money laundering rules. If they hadn’t, this may not have happened in the first place.”
