Government has woeful lack of ambition on children and young people’s mental health – Barbara Keeley

Barbara Keeley MP, Labour’s Shadow Cabinet Minister for Mental Health, commenting on the Government’s response to the Joint Education and Health and Social Care Committees’ report on the Children and Young People’s Mental Health Green Paper, said:

“This response reiterates the Tory Government’s woeful lack of ambition on children and young people’s mental health, from the inadequacy of funding to the number of children who won’t have access to mental health support and the timeframe for delivery.

“These proposals will serve only to heap pressure on over-worked teachers and leave hundreds of thousands of children without mental health support until 2023.

“Labour, by contrast, has pledged to increase the proportion of the mental health budget spent on children and young people’s services, and will ensure that access to a counselling service is available for all children in secondary schools.”
