Jonathan Ashworth responds to NHS performance stats
Jonathan Ashworth MP, Labour’s Shadow Health and Social Care Secretary, responding to today’s NHS performance statistics, said:
“The response from health ministers to the summer heatwave was utterly complacent and now we see it was the worst summer on record for the NHS. Labour warned at the beginning of the heatwave it would be a difficult summer and yet ministers failed to put in place a plan to protect patients from the worst of the summer weather.
“On all key performance measures the NHS is struggling to keep up with demand – A&E performance is down, waiting lists are rising, and even cancer services are overstretched.
“And with news this week of highest vacancies ever and hospitals in deficit of £4.3bn we are set for an extremely challenging winter unless ministers take action now to keep patients safe.”
