Jonathan Ashworth responds to Marmot Review
Jonathan Ashworth MP, Labour’s Shadow Health Secretary, responding to the Marmot Review on Health Equity in England, said:
“This is a devastating verdict on 10 years of austerity under the Conservatives, and demands urgent action from Boris Johnson.
“There is no greater social injustice than people dying sooner because of poverty and austerity. Yet not only is life expectancy stalling for the first time in more than 100 years, shockingly it is actually declining for the poorest 10 per cent of women.
“As Sir Michael warns, ‘poverty has a grip on our nation’. And child poverty is now projected to rise higher than even in the Thatcher years, condemning future generations to becoming ill quicker in life and dying sooner. Ministers must take the action recommended by Sir Michael to reverse these trends.
“Tackling health inequality so that people live longer, happier, healthier lives is a priority for Labour.”
