Parents, teachers and the public can’t trust Boris Johnson’s promises on school funding
Angela Rayner MP, Labour’s Shadow Education Secretary, responding to the IFS annual report on education spending in England, which shows that the government’s promised allocation to the schools budget will not even reverse the cuts seen since 2009-10, said:
“Parents, teachers and the public can’t trust Boris Johnson’s promises. The Tories have cut money for our schools while slashing taxes for the super-rich. After more than a decade of cuts, by 2022-23 our schools still won’t even get the same funding that they received 10 years ago, let alone the investment they need to give all our children a world-class education.
“As the IFS report makes clear, even after huge cuts to sixth form and further education colleges and adult education, yet more cuts are on the way for post-16 education.
“The next Labour government will fully reverse Tory cuts to our schools, increase per pupil funding in real terms and deliver a National Education Service that will ensure education is a right for all people throughout their lives, free at the point of use.”
Notes to Editors
Data in the IFS annual report on education spending shows that per pupil spending on schools will be lower in real terms in 2022-23 than it was in 2009-10. See Figure 3.8, data tables.
