Peter Dowd comments on prospect of post-Brexit customs checks

Peter Dowd MP, Labour’s Shadow Chief Secretary to the Treasury, commenting on the Financial Secretary’s response to an Urgent Parliamentary Question on customs checks at the border:

“Today represented another failed opportunity for Treasury ministers to reassure UK businesses that they will not see sudden border checks, tariffs and hard borders in Northern Ireland or at Dover and other ports across the UK.

“Rather than dispelling the dangerous and deluded assertion from the Transport Secretary that there will be no checks at Dover, irrespective of a hard border, the Minister instead chose to double down arguing once again that we can have our ‘cake and eat it’.

“The Government could protect jobs, the economy and guarantee no hard border in Northern Ireland by negotiating a comprehensive UK-EU customs union.”
