Social media companies self-regulation hasn’t worked – Jo Stevens

Responding to the NSPCC’s six tests for Government to create world-leading laws to protect children online, Shadow Secretary of State for Digital, Culture, Media and Sport Jo Stevens said:

“No one who has heard Ian Russell’s heart-breaking personal story can remain unconvinced we don’t need regulation.

“Social media companies have had more than enough time to get their houses in order but it’s absolutely clear self-regulation hasn’t worked.

“When the Online Harms bill finally arrives it must create a robust regulator, address legal but harmful material and provide children and others the powers and rights to protect themselves.

“Everyday the Government delays this legislation, it puts more children at risk of serious harm online.”
