“The Tories are weakening the pillars of our democracy” – Cat Smith
Cat Smith MP, Labour’s Shadow Minister for Democracy in the Cabinet Office, responding to the Committee on Standards in Public Life’s Report into Regulating Election Finance, said:
“This report lays bare the outdated and archaic nature of our electoral law. After 11 years of Government, the Conservatives must finally bring our laws into the 21st century while taking responsibility for the loopholes which currently leave our democracy exposed to foreign actors.
“An independent watchdog is paramount to having proper accountability in our democracy. The Conservatives’ recent moves to dictate the priorities of the Electoral Commission or their calls for its complete abolition, are yet more attempts by the Tories to rig democracy in their favour.
“With mounting opposition to the Government’s discriminatory Voter ID plans, the Tories are weakening the pillars of our democracy to silence scrutiny. The Government must urgently respond to these recommendations.”
