Today’s announcement does nothing to address enormous funding gap facing councils – Andrew Gwynne
Andrew Gwynne MP, Labour’s Shadow Communities and Local Government Secretary, commenting on the Government’s announcement on local government funding ahead of tomorrow’s report in the House of Commons, said:
“After nearly eight years of Conservative government, councils have lost 40 per cent of their funding from government and faced £6.3 billion in cuts to adult social care. Sajid Javid’s announcement today does nothing to address this enormous funding gap.
“Whilst this bung may stop a rebellion on the back benches tomorrow, it will not provide the funds urgently needed for vulnerable children and adult social care.
“Working people and ordinary families are paying the price of councils being forced to cut back and close essential services. We need to elect as many Labour councillors as possible on 3 May to stand up to the Conservatives’ cuts.”
